AQHA and Ranch Horse Association of America Join Forces

The American Quarter Horse Journal, May 21, 2008 – The American Quarter Horse Association and the Ranch Horse Association of America have formed a strategic marketing alliance to promote the growing interest in and usage of American Quarter Horses in ranch horse competition. Through specific association marketing agreements, AQHA joins forces with other associations in which the American Quarter Horse is predominately the breed of choice.

As part of the agreement, Ranch Horse Association of America performance records and earnings by American Quarter Horses will become part of the horse’s permanent AQHA record. This valuable information will be available to the public through AQHA’s Internet record search and will help owners promote their horse’s performance history. Also, AQHA will recognize the highest placing American Quarter Horse in each of the four RHAA National Finals classes as AQHA/RHAA Horses of the Year and present their owners a specially designed AQHA bronze trophy and a $500 cash bonus. Additionally, The American Quarter Horse Journal, a long-standing RHAA sponsor, will continue their sponsorship of the RHAA National Finals, which are held in Abilene, Texas, in conjunction with the Western Heritage Classic.

“Ranching and American Quarter Horses have been long-time partners in our nation’s history,” AQHA Executive Vice President Bill Brewer said. “AQHA is proud to partner with the Ranch Horse Association of America to promote the Western lifestyle and continue the legacy of the American Quarter Horse’s versatility.”

The RHAA was formed in 1998 to promote the qualities and characteristics of the ultimate working ranch horse, while providing a means of competition to show these ranch horses. The RHAA sanctions local working ranch horse competitions, provides a uniform set of rules, qualifies working ranch horse competition judges, and promotes uniformity and consistency in judging. The association works to accomplish these goals while maintaining traditional western influence with historic western sportsmanship and a cowboy ethic. To learn more about RHAA, visit their official Web site at www.rhaa.org.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

World Show Schedule Changes Shift Cutting Classes

The American Quarter Horse Journal, June 3, 2008 – The American Quarter Horse Association’s World Show isn’t starting until November, but AQHA is already busy building on the success of the 2007 World Show. The championship excitement begins Friday, November 7 in Oklahoma City and will include enhancements to the schedule to better accommodate exhibitors.

The World Show cutting classes will be held earlier in the schedule this year. The open cutting preliminaries will be contested on November 15, and the junior and senior cutting finals will take place November 19. The schedule is tentative and subject to change. Amateur cutting will be contested during Bank of America Amateur Week with prelims on November 11 and finals on November 13.

“After visiting with exhibitors and members of AQHA’s Professional Horsemen’s Association, we have decided to make changes to the World Show schedule,” said AQHA Executive Vice President Bill Brewer. “The changes will allow the show to run smoother.”

In addition to the changes to the schedule, some preliminaries will be contested in Barn 6. Construction efforts began at State Fair Park in 2005, and in 2007, exhibitors got a first-hand look at the enhancements. The World Show will take advantage of these improvements in 2008.

“Utilizing the arena in Barn 6 for preliminaries while competition continues in Norick Coliseum will improve the flow of the show and will allow us to stay on schedule,” Brewer said. “All finals will be contested in Norick Coliseum.”

The World Show begins a day earlier in 2008 and will continue through November 22. To view the tentative schedule, visit the World Show homepage at http://www.aqha.com/showing/shows/worldshow/schedule.html.

SADDLE UP AND RIDE WITH AQHA THIS SUMMER

America’s Horse, June 4, 2008 – School is out and summer is almost here, and for many that means time on the trails with their American Quarter Horse. With warmer weather and vacation time, riding provides a great way to relax and be outdoors. The American Quarter Horse Association provides many opportunities for members to enjoy their horses this summer.

AQHA’s Ride program hosts nearly 100 rides around the world each year. You can enjoy horseback riding, breathtaking scenery, fellowship with other riders, games, food and more. In addition to having an enjoyable time, you also get the satisfaction of helping benefit the American Quarter Horse Foundation and local charities. If you attend the greatest number of rides this season, you will win a Tex Tan saddle. Finding a Ride near you is easy. Visit http://www.aqha.com/recreation/ride/index.html.

Another option to help you stay in the saddle this summer is the Horseback Riding Program. You can ride in the arena, on the trail or down the road to log hours and win prizes. This program rewards you for doing what you love best. Learn more or enroll in the program at http://www.aqha.com/recreation/horseback/index.html.

If you crave competition, AQHA can provide that as well. AQHA-sanctioned shows are taking place around the world, and they provide divisions for all levels from novice and youth to professional. If you prefer an open or 4-H show close to home, you may still be able to earn AQHA points in approved classes. For a list of shows in your area, visit http://www.aqha.com/showing. Don’t forget your AQHA Regional Experience! It’s just another way to enjoy fun competition and learn from professionals during the summer months. Visit http://www.aqha.com/association/experience/index.html for the schedule.

Summer riding brings fun and enjoyment, but AQHA wants to remind everyone to keep safety in mind when heading out on the trail or to a show. To help you stay safe while enjoying your American Quarter Horse, follow some simple safety rules developed by the Certified Horsemanship Association, an alliance partner of AQHA. Visit http://www.aqha.com/recreation/ride/index.html#c for these suggestions.

Be safe and enjoy the summer with your American Quarter Horse!

SPANISH EDUCATIONAL LESSON PLANS OFFERED BY AMERICAN QUARTER HORSE HALL OF FAME

America’s Horse, June 3, 2008 The American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame & Museum’s current educational programs have gone bilingual. All existing and future educational lesson plans offered by the museum will now be available in Spanish.

Two Bits for Your Brain was created in order to supply local teachers with fun and interesting lesson plans that enhance the core curriculum and address the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS).  These lessons use the American Quarter Horse as the driving force behind math equations, science labs, writing practices and much more.  These instructive, exciting programs are free to all educators searching for diverse learning techniques to bring into their classroom. Two Bits for Your Brain is appropriate for both urban and rural school districts and doesn’t require a horse for the lessons.

“At the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame & Museum we realize how important it is to provide resources for second-language learners,” said American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame Manager of Educational Programs Ande Ragsdale. “We hope these lessons, available now in Spanish, will be a useful tool in the classroom and beyond.”

Ragsdale has been able to apply her experience as a certified teacher toward the development of these educational programs. She also hopes to meet the growing need of teaching aides for those who teach English as a Second Language.

While being developed, Jacqueline Marshall, a teacher in the Borger, Texas, Independent School District used the educational materials in her classroom. “Everything is so well organized,” Marshall said.  “The online activities are wonderful and we were glad to use the program’s resources.

Two Bits for Your Brain provides school systems with ESL power point presentations, lesson plans and resources in order to develop a more upbeat learning environment. Field trips and camps also provide opportunities for students to learn outside the classroom.

Visit the Education Resources link at www.aqhhalloffame.com to download lessons in PDF format and link to power point presentations for classroom use. Lesson plans are in English, but the actual power point lesson is in Spanish.

Two Bits for Your Brain complements the many educational programs developed by the American Quarter Horse Association. The Association’s popular Junior Master Horseman books I and II follow the McRel teaching standards in math, science and language arts, and have been used by schools, scout troops and 4-H groups to teach young people while using the horse as a tool. Like Two Bits for Your Brain, no horse is required but young people come away having learned more and in the process developed a deeper love and appreciation for the horse.

Please visit the Junior Master Horseman Web site at www.juniormasterhorseman.com. For more information, contact Ward Stutz at (806) 378-4331 or wstutz@aqha.org.

For more information about American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame educational opportunities, contact Ande Ragsdale at (806) 376-5181 or ande@aqha.org.

The 2008 Band City Classic second annual stick horse competition was once again a huge hit.  Stick horses could be seen being prepared all weekend and on Monday afternoon they took to the arena to ride a most challenging pattern - Trail - Blindfolded.  Thanks to every one who competed in the Team Tournament and the Stick Horse Competition.  Thanks also to our SQHA Director Sandy Hebig and Horse Show Mom Shannon Plourde for setting this up for us and making it such a great time.  We were disappointed that last years champion Puff did not return to defend his title but owner Kyle Weston announced that Puff has been retired from competition.  Thanks to Sharla Buisse - Horse Show Mom to Riley Buisse and Dee Mosion for the pictures of the competitors.

We welcomed a number of new competitors to SQHA at this show.  Lisa Aiken of Moose Jaw Toyota joined us and provided the Grass Roots classes with a very generous donation.  Thanks very much to the Moose Jaw Toyota for their continued support of our Association.  Moose Jaw Toyota Trailer Sales has also donated the use of a new Exiss trailer to the winner of the Versatility Ranch Horse Competition which will take place August 28, 2008.

American Quarter Horse Foundation Receives Record $2 Million Gift

AQHA Past President and Hall of Fame Member Clarence Scharbauer Jr. dedicated to preserving American Quarter Horse history.

America’s Horse, May 20, 2008 – The American Quarter Horse Foundation announced today that it received the largest gift from an individual in its history. Clarence Scharbauer Jr. of Midland, Texas, is making a $2 million donation to the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame & Museum. This latest gift is in addition to a previous gift of $500,000 given by Scharbauer and his late wife Dorothy Turner Scharbauer.

“Clarence gave a visionary gift to the museum in 1995 for the Scharbauer Gallery of the AQHA Heritage Center & Museum,” AQHA Executive Vice President Bill Brewer said. “With this additional extraordinary contribution of $2 million, Clarence once again sets the bar in generosity which underscores his love of the American Quarter Horse and his dedication to the Foundation’s mission. Clarence has such a keen interest in our heritage that in recognition of his gift we are naming one of the key features of the Grand Hall in his honor as the Dorothy and Clarence Scharbauer Jr. Foundation Bloodlines Chart. We truly appreciate Clarence and his gift.”

Scharbauer’s family has ranched in Texas since the mid-1880s. Scharbauer has been raising American Quarter Horses for ranch work and racing for more than 50 years. Elected as an AQHA Director in 1957, Scharbauer served as the Association’s 25th president in 1975. He was inducted into the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame in 1992.

“There are no words to describe what the American Quarter Horse means to me and my family,” Scharbauer said. “I was 15 years old when the Association was formed and I’ve always had an interest. I was raised on a horse. My father was a very good horseman and had very good horses. The American Quarter Horse has meant everything to me.”

Scharbauer’s first registered horses were stallions he bought from the King Ranch: Royal Peppy by Peppy, and Silver Wimpy by Wimpy P-1. In 1948, he registered 100 of his best mares.

“Wimpy was given the first number for being the grand champion at Fort Worth in 1941,” Scharbauer said. “I had the grand champion at Fort Worth in 1955. I also raised the world champion cutting mare of 1954 and ’56. American Quarter Horses have been close to me all along, and having good horses and raising good horses is what I enjoy. Our band of mares is one of the best in the country. My youngest son, Chris, still manages them like I and my father did.”

While Scharbauer was 17 and attending Texas A&M University, his father died. He went home after one semester at Texas A&M to help his mother and Mr. Eidson, the executor of his father’s estate, and then spent about two and a half years in the Navy during World War II. At 21, he took control of his family’s business.

In the mid-1950s Scharbauer became interested in racehorses and purchased Double Bid in July 1957. He campaigned the stallion to a racing champion title two years later in 1959. In 1964, Scharbauer won the first Rainbow Futurity with Double Queen, a daughter of Double Bid. He won the 1975 All American Derby with Double Queen’s daughter Vim And Vigor, who was Go Man Go’s highest earner with $310,204. Runners bred by Scharbauer have earned more than $5.5 million and include three racing champions.

Scharbauer has also been involved in Thoroughbred racing. He purchased Alysheba for his wife and their daughter, Pam. Alysheba won the 1987 Kentucky Derby and was named Horse of the Year in 1988. Dorothy came by her love of horses naturally as her father won the Kentucky Derby in 1959 with Tomy Lee.

“I’m not looking for publicity,” Scharbauer said of his historic gift. “I’m just proud that I’m able to do it, and I’m very pleased to do it. My family comes first and my horses come next.”

With his generous gift, Scharbauer is leaving a legacy that will ensure future generations will be able to learn the history of the American Quarter Horse and perhaps share the same great bond between horse and human that has influenced his life.

The American Quarter Horse Foundation’s programs support research, education, therapeutic riding and the Hall of Fame. To learn more about the Foundation and ways to support its programs, please visit aqha.com/foundation, or call (806) 378-5000.

AQHA TELEVISION PRESENTS ONLINE CONTEST FOR YOUTH MEMBERS

Winner featured on “AQHA Presents” on RFD-TV Network

America’s Horse, May 16, 2008 – The American Quarter Horse Association’s weekly television series, “AQHA Presents,” is preparing to launch its next Team Wrangler online contest. This time, American Quarter Horse Youth Association members will have the chance to have their American Quarter Horse made over with the help of Team Wrangler members.

The online essay contest, “Team Wrangler – Make Over My American Quarter Horse,” is exclusively for AQHYA members who are current members as of May 15. Youth can log on to www.aqhamembers.com any day between May 19 and June 9, and in 150 words or less, tell how and why their horse needs a makeover, and how a Team Wrangler member can help. The selected winner will have Team Wrangler members come to their barn for a two-day training session to help make over their American Quarter Horse. Plus, the winner will be featured on an upcoming episode of “AQHA Presents” on the RFD-TV network and in America’s Horse magazine. Prizes for second- through 10th- place winners include a Junior Master Horseman gift pack (levels one and two) or AQHA’s Fundamentals of Horsemanship Level I and Wrangler product pack.

“We want our youth members to have the opportunity to learn from some of our outstanding professional horsemen and horsewomen,” said AQHA Executive Vice President Bill Brewer. “This contest will help some lucky youth member who might not have access to a professional become more educated and confident with their American Quarter Horse.”

“AQHA Presents” television series on RFD-TV includes educational and entertaining shows featuring top Team Wrangler members. In addition to “Make Over My Horse,” other Team Wrangler shows include “What’s It Like To,” where Team Wrangler members give a one-on-one lesson from their discipline, such as cutting or roping, to a member of the AQHA publications staff, and “Trading Saddles,” where Team Wrangler members trade places with another member of a different discipline.

“AQHA Presents” airs three times weekly – Wednesdays at 1 p.m. and 11 p.m. EST and Saturdays at 12:30 p.m. EST. Now available in more than 31 million homes, RFD-TV can be seen on satellite systems Dish (Channel 231) and DirectTV (Channel 379), as well as Mediacom, Charter, Suddenlink, Bresnan and Comcast cable systems. “AQHA PRESENTS” LINEUP OF MAY SHOWS ON RFD-TV

America’s Horse, May 6, 2008 – The American Quarter Horse Association’s weekly “AQHA Presents” television schedule for May is packed with all new must-see shows. Viewers will learn the tricks behind swinging a rope from the pros during a new “AQHA Team Wrangler Presents” episode, followed by new episodes of the multi-show series exploring more of the AQHA Bayer Best Remuda Award winning ranches. The much-anticipated “Team Wrangler Presents Fix My Horse” episode, an entertaining finale to the popular aqha.com Fix My Horse contest, will round out the month’s programming.

On May 7, AQHA will present Team Wrangler roper Steve Orth demonstrating how to swing a loop. The new “Team Wrangler Presents” episode will break down the deceptively detailed sport of roping for viewers as Steve teaches a rookie how it’s done. From how to hold a rope properly to swinging the loop from a horse, viewers will not want to miss any of this show.

Following this “Team Wrangler Presents” episode, AQHA will continue its tour of the AQHA Bayer Best Remuda Award winning ranches. This series explores some of the most accomplished ranch horse programs and the horses that have earned them their prestigious reputations. On May 14, visit the Stuart Ranch of Waurika, Oklahoma, the Bar B Ranch of Beaver, Oklahoma, and the R.A. Brown Ranch of Throckmorton, Texas. The May 21 episode features the Pitchfork Land and Cattle Company of Guthrie, Texas, and two New Mexico ranches, Bogle Ltd. of Dexter and CS Cattle Company of Cimarron. The episodes follow AQHA’s release of its “Best Remudas” DVD, available to members for a limited time with a signed copy of the “Best Remudas” book by AQHA’s Jim Jenning’s. To learn more about this special offer, visit http://www.aqha.com/discover/promoItems/bestremudas.html.

Finishing the month’s programming on May 28 will be “Team Wrangler Presents Fix My Horse.” After reviewing many aqha.com contest entries in which members described a problem area with their horse, AQHA selected Corinne Schnur of Butler, Pennsylvania, as the lucky member to be featured in the episode and America’s Horse magazine. Schnur’s winning essay was chosen from more than 200 entries and was a plea for help from her 8-year-old American Quarter Horse gelding Apparently Insane, also known as “Jake,” who needs assistance with lead changes. Schnur and Jake are all-around competitors who want to expand their list of classes.

Team Wrangler members Leslie Lange, Charlie Cole and Ted Turner visit Schnur and Jake to fix their lead change problem and also help Schnur prepare for halter classes, which she hopes to begin entering. RFD-TV viewers get to watch all the action as the Team Wrangler members take on the training challenge.

Following this exciting competition, AQHA will be beginning its next competition in search of an American Quarter Horse Youth Association member and horse to feature on the upcoming “Team Wrangler Presents Makeover My Horse” episode. Entries will be limited to youth members and will be accepted between May 19 and June 9. Check aqha.com for more updates.

All programs will air on the regular RFD-TV schedule – Wednesdays at 1 p.m. and 11 p.m. Eastern and Saturdays at 12:30 p.m. Eastern. To see the full programming schedule go to www.aqha.com/association/television/index.html.
